Leadership Essay - 1739 Words
Leadership Essay Do I possess the traits and behaviors associated with leadership? If not, can I now learn how to be a leader at this stage of my life? What kind of leader am I? Is that the kind of leader I want to be? What do my superiors, co-workers, friends, and family think of my leadership style and ability? Why am I sometimes uncomfortable talking about myself as a leader? Working my way through the text, interviewing colleagues, and checking into other resources, I can form a personal picture and embrace a personal theory about my own leadership style and ability. I may have stirred up more questions than I am able to answer but the process has been a fascinating insight to self-discovery. The end result is a desire to tryâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦I have to wonder if they just donââ¬â¢t want to hurt my feelings by making suggestions, if they truly donââ¬â¢t have anything to suggest, if they didnââ¬â¢t have enough time to reflect, or if something else is going on. My time on the XX board was interesting because this organization was just forming and a permanent Advisory Board actually never made it into existence. My analysis of the situation is that the person forming the organization ultimately wanted a rubber stamp committee and once that became clear to us, all the members of the so-called ââ¬Å"interim Advisory Committeeâ⬠decided unanimously to cease involvement. At this point, I must add the results of a divergent third interview that both confirms and contradicts the first two. For this interview, I decided to ask my son, XY, age 22, what he thought of my leadership style. First, I explained the theories in Chapter 14 and focused our discussion on the Transformational Leadership Theory. (Kreitner 411 - 413) Then, I asked him what he personally thought of my leadership style, as he experienced it. Without any hesitation he stated that I use a very different style with him than I do with anybody else. He said that, while he has seen me being transformational with the board members and committee members I interact with, I am completely and totally transactional with him. He says that I am ââ¬Å"activeâ⬠rather than ââ¬Å"passiveâ⬠or ââ¬Å"laissez faireâ⬠with my transactional style of leading (parenting.)
