Planned And Emergent Strategy For Business And Marketing Planning Essay
Planned And Emergent Strategy For Business And Marketing Planning Essay Planned And Emergent Strategy For Business And Marketing Planning â" Essay Example > SIMILARITIES AND CONTRAST BETWEEN SCENARIO PLANNING AND COMPETING ON EDGE. (2006)INTRODUCTIONThe global business in contemporary era is characterized by keen competition and dynamic nature of conducting the day to day business. Hence, there is the need to curve a niche for an organization before it gains competitive advantage over its rivals. It then requires that the adoption of a more effective and pragmatic strategy is germane in attaining this height. Strategic management which entails how an organization adapt in its environment by the adequate utilization of its resources in meeting its sets goals and objectives, is a significant management techniques adopted in modern organization management in the effective attainment of set targets. The uncertainties that are facing business organization are further intensified by the dynamic nature of conducting business operations. Thus, there is a need to enforce the management of change through an effective strategic technique. Strate gic planning is an invaluable tool in the hands of managers of businesses, in meeting the challenges of uncertainties and stiff competition in the business industry they operate in. In this instance, Brown Eisenhardt (1998:4), defined strategic as basically consisting two things: deciding where you want your business to go and figuring out how to get thereâ. There are many models of strategic planning; thus applying the right one for the right organizational problem would result in the maximization of optimum result. This essay tends to compared and contrasts between strategic framework, i.e. Scenario Planning and Competing on Edge. These strategic approaches would be compared on how effectively they are in maximizing the result expected in a given period of uncertainty. Also, the differences in the two approaches would be given looking at their advantages and disadvantages. CONCEPTUALIZATION OF TERMSScenario planning: Scenario planning is considered as a tool for businesses in different industry in coping with the unpredictability, and gives insights to them in finding better solution for the future problems as they arise. Rigland (1998:12), defined it as âscenario are often thought of as a management development tools as a way of creating shared vision, as well as better plans in organizationsâ. To Shoemaker (1991:549), scenario is defined as a script- like characterization of a possible future presented in considerable detail, with special emphasis on causal connections, internal consistency, and concreteness. Thus, corporate planning, make use of multiple scenarios to characterize the range within which the future is likely to evolve. Scenario planning is used not only in investment and portfolio management, it also involve the creation of foresight and developing an international perspective for the organization. It is an adequate tool for planning for uncertainties and brainstorming towards seeking ways to handle a foreseen problem. Drawing a b oundary or sphere of applying scenario planning, Wack (1985), cited in Shoemaker (1991: 550), argues that âscenarios are not states of nature or predictions. The focus is not on forecasting the future, or fully characterizing its uncertainty, but rather on bounding the uncertaintiesâ. Competing on the Edge: âCompeting on Edgeâ is a modern strategic technique use in the management of change that occurs in an organization. According to Brown Eisenhardt (1998:4), competing on the edge is defined as a strategy which entails the creation of a relentless flow of competitive advantages that, taken together, form a semi coherent strategic direction. Competing on the edge acknowledges the key driver of superior performance as the ability to change. And success is measured by the ability to survive, to change, and ultimately to reinvent the firm constantly over time. Thus, competing on the edge is a strategy more pragmatic in the management of unpredictable and uncontrollable dynam ics of modern business. âThe underlying insight behind competing on the edge is that strategy is the result of a firmâs organizing to change constantly and letting a semi coherent strategic direction emerge from that organization. In other words, it is about combining the two parts of strategy by simultaneously addressing where you want to go and how you are going to get thereâ (ibid: 7)

Reflective Reflection - 748 Words
In the final days of this semester, one tends to look back at the work done over a difficult and long three months. In the case of this English composition class, reflecting on completed essays has allowed me to analyze the development of my writing over the semester. Although this semester consisted of only five essays, it has become apparent to me that my writing has improved in many aspects throughout the semester. One general example of this improvement is the vocabulary, where simple vocabulary in the first essay had become more complex by the final essays. Additionally, I also believe that my writing has become more reflective of my actual voice and opinions, an improvement considering my first essays were best described as vague.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Out of the few compositions that we had completed during the semester, it was my argumentative essay that stood out from my point of view. In this essay, I was tasked with presenting the controversial question of whether social media has had a positive or negative impact on society by analyzing the arguments made by both sides of the spectrum. From there, I would take a stance on the question at the end of the introductory paragraph and present my arguments as to why I chose that position. The purpose of this essay was to present an opinion on a controversial topic to my reader and explain and clarify my opinion using evidence I had gathered. In writing this essay, there were areas in which I believe I exceled in. For example, I had brought up clear points as to why social media is credible, such as allowing for open communication and expression of oneself. In addition, I gathered strong evidence from outside sources to bolster my argument. Finally, I believe that my strong outline aided me in writing and organizing this essay. Just as there were strong points in this essay, so too there were weaknesses. One notable weakness that I believe could have been improved on was providing additional content on the counterargument paragraph. In this paragraph, I discussed how Ashley Graham increases self-esteem for others, rather than decrease self-esteem like what has been claimed. I believe that additional evidence from another source could have betterShow MoreRelatedReflective Reflection On Reflective Practice2289 Words à |à 10 PagesReflection is considered as a state of mind which is a continuous practice (Fanghanel, 2004, p. 576). Sigmund Freudââ¬â¢s -The Future of an Illusion Essay The Future of an Illusion is a book about religion written by Sigmund Freud, in the year 1927.à This book gives us the idea of some of the future studies conducted by Freud.à He begins his book by giving 2 characteristics of human civilization (vol. 1, pg. 1).à He speaks about the knowledge and technology developed to organize and exploit the natural resources, and developed society for fulfilling human requirements (vol. 1, pg. 2).à Human civilizations have also developed certain regulations to maintain a proper relationship between one another. à Human beings depend on one another, and the extent to which relationships can develop depends on the degree to which the natural wealth can satisfy instincts.à An individual can function as labor or as an object of sexuality for another individual.à In spite of civilization being an object of universal interest, each individual is potentially an enemy of civilization.à Civilization may have to defend itself from the individual and regulations need to be formed (vol. 1, pg. 6).à Freud feels that civilization should be based on coercion and renunciation of instinct.à Human beings contain a lot of destructive thoughts, thus anti-social behavior will arise.à This is capable of determining the behavior of a number of people.à Freud began to think of the extent to which it was possible to control instincts so as to restrict people.à However, he felt that is was very difficult to control a majority by a minority, who knows how to attain the methods to power and force (vol. 1, pg. 7).à Freud considers groups to be lazy and irresponsible and felt that certain individuals who could set examples could act as a leader for the group.à He was capable of performing the work necessary to maintain civilization.à Freud felt that humans instinctively did not like work and did not consider moral or intellectual issues against drives or passions (vol. 1, pg. 8).à In general humans functio n in accordance with their instincts and desires. Freud considered that since instincts were not satisfied by privation and frustration from human life, they had to be re-compensated.à He distinguishes between privations that affect everyone, and those that affect certain groups, classes and individuals.à Privations that affect individuals developed even before civilization, and are characterized by prohibitions formed when humanity began to detach itself from the animal condition.à These prohibitions are still existent (in the form of cannibalism, lust for destruction, etc) and are creating hostilities in civilization (vol. 2, pg. 10).à Freud felt that the Super ego has developed from social prohibitions.à Some people have become vehicles, rather than opponents, with influence from the super ego.à Cultures that have adopted prohibitions were secure (vol. 2, pg. 10).à Freud feels that the under-privileged classes of the society will envy the more favored ones.à This class will do whatever possible to free the mselves from their privation.à This could lead to dangers in civilization.à Hence, presence of under-privileged classes will always create hostilities in the society. Freud feels that religious ideas develop as a need to defend us from the superior forces of nature.à He also feels that another motive from the deficiencies of civilization inherent from religious beliefs is created (civilization may hand over ready made ideas to the individuals).à The individual in such circumstance may be incapable of discovering their inner selves (vol. 4, pg. 21). Freud considers religious ideas as teaching about the reality, which an individual has not yet discovered.à Religious beliefs have three characteristics, namely they ought to be believed (as they have been by our ancestors), evidence has been reported by our ancestors and questions against religious beliefs are forbidden.à Many people have doubts about religious beliefs, but pressure imposed upon them has suppressed their urge to ask questions (vol. 5, pg. 27).à Freud has also attempted to justify religious viewpoints in two ways.à The first one was being followed by the early Christian church and is beyond human reasoning (truth should be felt inside and cannot be explained or understood).à In the second one, Freud says that human thought activities include a number of hypotheses which may be baseless, but due to certain reasons we begin to believe as if these fictions were true. Freud believes that regarding the psychical origin of religious ideas, humanity has adopted them and they have become our strongest and oldest desires.à He feels that they are illusions or desires to protect us from the forces of nature.à He considers that illusions arise from mistakes made in fulfilling desires. à Since illusions are derived from human desires, they may seem like psychic delusions.à This may differ from religious illusions in their association with reality and falseness (delusions oppose reality, whereas illusions need not always oppose reality).à A belief may become an illusion when in trying to fulfill a wish from motivation, are unable to do it due to the reality situation (vol. 6, pg. 31).à Hence most religious concepts are illusions as no individual can be forced to believe them, nor can the concepts be proved or disproved.à However, no one can be forced to disbelieve a religion. Freud also considers that many other illusions exist in nature, which through unwritten rules are forbidden to talk about.à Freud considers that religion has done a lot of benefits for the society by calming antisocial instincts (vol. 7, pg. 37).à Many people have benefited from the fact that religion ruling civilization, and no wants to change it because they are satisfied.à However, some people are unhappy with civilization and are trying to alter it.à They may try to isolate themselves from society.à Science has made advancements such that religion may not affect so much as it previously did. Freud feels that the insecurities of life have has united society and has prevented one from killing another.à This is how justice and punishment has developed.à By killing somebody we are really going against cultural prohibitions and against Godââ¬â¢s intentions (vol. 8, pg. 40).à God has become a part of human culture, that it is very difficult to separate God (as rules are differing in nature suggest human insufficiency).à It would be better to remove God from the cultural system and consider it to be a kind of human origin for all rules and regulations of civilization.à Freud says that such rules have been recognized to serve us; hence we tend to blindly accept them, and aim for improving them rather than eliminating them.à Freud considers this to be a step-forward in the road of civilization (vol. 8, no. 41). Freud points out that just as a child while entering into adulthood, enters into a some form of neurosis (due to suppression of instincts), in the same way humanity has gone through several stages including neurosis (includes human ignorance and weakness of the mind), such that sacrifice of certain instincts was necessary for existence of the society. à In the same way, religion developed out of universal neurosis (an association with our father).à Believe in these universal neurosis safeguards believers who have high chances of developing neurotic disorders. Some feel that Freudââ¬â¢s ideas of not believing in God are dangerous to civilization.à Besides obedient followers to religion are being considered as neurotics.à However, Freud feels that his ideas are harmless and no believer would let go of his or her faith.à Freud feels that intellectual weakness may often be due to religious education (vol. 9, pg. 46).à He also considers that a religious believer would not let go off his beliefs easily, either through arguments or prohibitions (vol. 9, pg. 49). Freud feels that in the long-run religious concepts will be disregarded, even if the initial attempts fail.à This is because reason and experience would survive the test of time.à He considers that science has the power to gain more knowledge of the reality, thus increasing our forces.à If we tend to consider that such beliefs are illusions, then it would be like considering some untrue beliefs.à Science is able to prove several things about reality through evidence.à Scientific evidence can be tested in nature, and would evolve if proven false.
